Utah Naloxone is committed to increasing access to naloxone to PREVENT

opioid overdose death in Utah

Naloxone (Narcan®) reverses and stops an opioid overdose.

It saves lives, and is legal to have!

We are prescribers, pharmacists, public health workers, recovery advocates, and friends that, consequently, have lost loved ones to the opioid epidemic. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently called our current crisis with opioid overdoses and deaths an epidemic, and we completely agree.

At the present time in Utah:

  • Overdose is the leading cause of injury death.
  • Presently, the rate of overdose death exceeds that of motor vehicle collisions and firearms.
  • On a weekly basis more than 10 Utahns will die from an overdose.
  • Utah had the 4th highest rate of drug overdose death in the U.S. in 2012-2014, the 7th highest rate in 2013-2015.
  • Additionally, Utah has the 1st highest rate of drug overdose death for veterans.
  • These rates went up nearly 400% between 2000-2010, and continue to rise.
  • Children and adolescents are impacted both directly and indirectly by opioid overdose.

The substances most responsible for these poisoning deaths come from opioid medications including morphine, methadone, hydrocodone, fentanyl, oxycodone, and heroin. However, opioid overdose is reversible through the timely administration of the drug naloxone (Narcan®) and the provision of emergency care. Naloxone (Narcan®) is an antidote for opioid overdose. Further, it can reverse the overdose and save a life!

This is a very safe antidote and it is LEGAL to have in the state of Utah. If you believe this can benefit you or someone you love, get naloxone in your life now.
